John N's Top Albums of 2011

1. Youth Lagoon - The Year of Hibernation: Hazy and distantly, as the album title suggest, Trevor Powers sounds as if he just woke up from a long sleep and just started writing and singing. The themes on this album are mostly about reflection set to the back drop of synths, keyboards, and drum machines... all of which are my favorite instruments.

 2. Cullts - Cults: Well worth the wait and the buzz.  This album contains a lot of elements that I tend to gravitate towards in music: female vocals, 60's pop sound, and a dash of the macabre.  Yet it still leaves one feeling happy.

3. M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming: Nostalgia, once again M83 managed to create an album that sounds like it could have come from an 80's movie soundtrack, John Hughes and the Brat Pack would be proud.  As a fan of 80's movies it's no wonder why this became one of my favorites.

4. Washed Out - Within and Without:  Whenever I listen to this album, I feel like I am in a dream at a disco dancing... yeah I am also wearing bell bottoms and there is a smoke machine.  With the hush vocals, disco beats and synths this album quickly became one of my favorites.

5. Drake - Take Care:  This seems to be very personal hip hop album, there are undertones remorse and regret for the hip hop lifestyle and thanks to the folks that got him to his current standing in the scene. Also Drake has the ability to cover every facet of R&B and hip hop.  He can seamlessly rhyme and belt out a tune.

6. Weeknd - House of Ballons and Thursday: I have only had these albums for less than a week, if it were on tape I would have worn it out.  As a kid I grew up listing to quite storm on the radio late at night. So to hear an album that mixes quite storm moods with modern and party themes was quite a joy to hear.

7. Metronomy - The English Riviera:  If I were walking along a beach while the sun sets anticipating a night of dancing, this would be the album I would listen too.  With a lineup change, which includes the addition of some female vocals and tracks with more bass, their sound seems to be more rounded out.  I hope they continue to move in this direction.

8. Destroyer: Kaputt: There are always albums suited for cretin times of day, and this album is no exception... an album suited for night time listing.  Bold as this statement might be, I would also describe this album as an indie pop orchestral masterpiece.  It incorporates some of the best parts of pop and jazz.

9. Thee Oh Sees - Carrion Crawler/ The Dream:  The album cover alone is awesome, and is probably my favorite of the year.  They play the type of psychedelic garage rock that make one loose their sh*t.  Thee Oh Sees are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands.    I can't wait to see these guys live.

10. Ice Age - New Brigade: Dark, foreboding and melodic, I don't know if it's because these guys are young, but there is something pure about the punk rock these guys play.  I will be watching this band for years to come... that is if they manage to stick together.
